Has anyone run Ubuntu as a guest on an Ubuntu host and seen a
"stuttering key" effect, where typing something like "http://"; will
start resulting on the VM with "httttttttttttttttttttttttttttttp://" or
worse? Any fix for that?

Vbox additions are installed on the Ubuntu guest.

There is a bug open in Launchpad stating that certain kernels on
certain hardware causes this. You really should add your find to that
bug, as it may be easier to reproduce for the devs.

Thanks Dotan, I'll check that out too.
