it asks for the same disk over and over again and even when i give it
the disk it asks for it doesent see it. I am at wits end here and so far
all i can think of is maybe updating the system later on when i have a
chance to gather a new set of parts. But it would REALLY help if i could
get this computer running. Idk guys what do you think should i switch
OS' and try something else or.... idk but any help would be wonderful
because hosting this all on a windows box that is constantly used just
wont do it.

Let me dissect your ramblings. First, your subject line doesn't describe
the problem. Second, there is no structure in your mail.
I'm going to take a lot of effort in rewriting your email as you should
have written it in the first place. I will edit out all of the nonsense.
I will also add questions for missing information, and some remarks. You
will have to answer all of my questions before I will consider helping you.

* Do you have hands-on access to the server?
* Or do you only have ssh access?

It is an old p3 machine with 64 megs of ram (128 soon)

* This is a low-end specification. You should use the Alternate or
Server installation image, or use the debootstrap installation method
and do everything manually.
* show the output of "lspci", "cat /proc/cpuinfo", "free" and "fstab -l"

* WHY for heaven's sake why 5.04? Why not 8.04 or 8.10?
* Describe the EXACT procedure that you used to upgrade.
* What is your current version?
* Show the output of "cat /etc/issue"

* If you don't get an error, describe what you mean with "stall".

bit on the low side.

* This is not needed. You can use ddclient, or any other dyndns update
client on linux. Just do "apt-cache search dyndns" to get a choice.

When I install an ftp server with "sudo aptitude install proftpd",
aptitude asks for the same disk over and over again, and aptitude
doesn't see the disk when I insert it.
QUESTIONS:
* What is the EXACT error message?
* Show the output of "cat /etc/apt/sources.list"
* Run the following commands and show the complete output: "sudo
aptitude update" followed by "sudo aptitude safe-upgrade"
