I have Jaunty on my laptop and it is working fine but their appears
to be a problem with some of the mirrors or who knows. In any case I open
Up-Date Manager and it reports there are 90 updates available. But
when it tries to d/l the updates it spits out error panels saying it can
not find some things.

Open a terminal and type the following:

sudo aptitude update

just on a sidenote, the "check" button (the one with the little circling
arrow) in update-manager does exactly that, i'd recommend simply always
clicking it first before trying to install updates and you wont ever run
into that problem again ;)

Well, I have used aptitude 3 times now and it works just fine. I can
see what is happening with aptitude and you don't using the GUI software.

Also I was having trouble with vlc loosing it's audio after a few
hours. I fixed that with aptitude remove vlc, and then aptitude install
vlc on this Hardy computer. It fixed the problem :-)

Sorry Karl, but I have to disagree with you. You can see what is going
on when you use Synaptic or the Add/Remove programs in the Applications
menu. In either program after you've selected the packages to install
and click on the Apply button, you can click where it says "Show for
individual files" and see it as each package is downloaded. Then when
it goes to install, just click where it says "Details" and it opens a
window where you can see the installation progress.

Only thing is that there doesn't appear to be a way to make these
windows open automatically by default. Instead you have to open them
every time you use Synaptic or Add/Remove programs.
