Re: msgs not reaching list

Anthony Baldwin:

The "From" header value in your message and the value of the "mail from"
command in the SMTP dialog (when two mail servers talk to each other)
are two completely different things.
You can think of the latter as the sender address you write on the
outside of an (snail mail) envelope, while the former is like an address
in the letterhead on the sheet of paper you put inside this envelope.
From the postal service's perspective the sender address is the address
on the envelope - no matter what's printed on the sheet inside (no
envelopes with windows in this example).

Similarly: whether or not the list server accepts your mail depends on
the address given during the "mail from" stage of the SMTP dialog (the
"envelope address"). What address you put into the "From" header
*inside* your mail is (probably) irrelevant wrt acceptance/refusal of
the list server.

Okay, it seems that when I send from the gmail web interface, my msgs
succeed in reaching the list (although they take a long time to
arrive), while messages I send from Seamonkey mail do not, even when
replying to msgs on the list.
Do I then understand...that the problem may be caused by the fact that
my SMTP settings in seamonkey mail are set up to use the
other/nonsubscribed account to access the smtp.gmail.com server?
Maybe I should just use my ISP's smtp server for outgoing mail...but,
then, according to how I understand this problem, would the msgs then
be sent from the addy my ISP gave me (@comcast.net), which I never
use, and which is not subscribed?
I don't recall ever having these issues using POP mail on e-lists,
regardless of what SMTP server I used, and I don't have any such
issues sending msgs to yahoo! groups lists....I wonder if it's just an
IMAP glitch, or a gmail glitch, or what...
Still a little confused...
Perhaps I will just change my SMTP settings to use this acct to access
the gmail smtp server, since the only place I'm having issues is
sending to these lists.
Also, I realize that this might be slightly OT, since it's not really
an Ubuntu issue, but just a list issue, and, in all truth, a mail
issue at my end...So, as such, I appreciate your input.

thanks,
tony
