Re: ubuntu-users Digest, Vol 57, Issue 167

Hi

I have extensive knowledge when it comes to computer hardware, most
Microsoft packages.

But with Ubunta I am having all sorts of problems installing programs
that have been downloaded of the web, I do not mean the the add/remove
programs.

For example trying to operate the chat program to do with IRC just to
communicate with people to learn more about Linux or Ubunta, so far no
luck with any, just great frustration.

Do you know of any courses over the web or locally on how to operate
Ubunta, I think it is the terms that throw us of.

I switched from microsoft products over to Ubunta because of less
problems but I am re thinking of going back to microsoft because being
able to understand the software.

The help lines on the Ububta home page just going around in circles.

Thanks Craig

I did the right thing and now I have a KDE 8.10 which
works but not
in all ways. The KDE looks good and all the KDE tools are
there but it
can't get me connected to WiFi. And now when I choose
to use Gnome, it
has forgot how to use wifi too.

So KDE is nice if, but I will never install it on any other
of my Linux
or windows systems.

Why don't you install wicd which will remove network manager, reboot and your wireless will likely be working again.. If not, go through the wicd icon menu and enable your wireless card and all should be good.
NM is known to have some issues and I don't think I'll use it again. Wicd just works for me; I didn't even have to set it up, just installed it and it worked. HTH.

Hi Leonard, when I removed the files I had put in wrong, WiFi
started working as before. After putting in the proper files both WiFi
and kde are working fine.

No telling what I had. It was bad. After removing the offending
files and loading the right files everything changed. At the first
window you can decide which to use, and which to make default. It is
just fine. Not sure I like KDE because right now I think the screen
looks like a broken Windows XP :-)

Just now I did a couple of "remove" things and now I have what
appears to be a clean gnome based 8.10 that works because this message
is typed on it.

Now I plan to use the $ sudo aptitude kubuntu-desktop and see what
damage it can do. At least I will have just one thing to remove if it
fails :-)

If you want to get the complete KDE desktop then do this in a terminal:

$ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop kde

If you want to see what's going to be installed then do this:

$ aptitude show kubuntu-desktop
$ aptitude show kde

This will show you all the packages that will be installed, naturally
any duplicates between the two meta-packages will be ignored.

Hi Roy, I think that might be educational, but I am just trying to
make both gnome and kde work. Using $ sudo aptitude install
kubuntu-desktop has fixed my system. I do think it would be nice if when
an idiot tries to get kde, the system should suggest that you really
want kubuntu-desktop. Same with the synaptic system.

more
intelligent than a windoze user!

Please stop making the conversation personal. I have honestly written my
opinion of the matter. See, I am not a Ubuntu/Windows evangelist. I have
written not the way it works for me, but the way it does not work for my
friends. I love Ubuntu, and more than a sort of prejudiced way (against MS).
By your comments, I think you don't want to reach out to the Windows users
anyway!

I've never had a problem that wasn't addressed and fixed in a very short
time
unlike other OSes I have used.

Yes true. But my contention was that there are more issues than proprietary
OSes. To be able to make Ubuntu/other Linux prevalent in the enterprise and
at home, Ubuntu needs to cross the chasm.

Has always run fine here and infact how Skype ran on my factory installed
Dell, caused several of my co-workers to dump what they had and install
Kubuntu on their machines.

Skype now runs fine on Ubuntu, but an year ago it sure didn't run out of the
box. Now I like to use Globe7, which does not work on Ubuntu for me.

It is, mostly because we constantly have so much windoze crud over here we
have to waste time with.

Yes, you are just stating the problem. If you're interested in considering a
solution, you would be more willing to listen to criticism.

Maybe if we downgraded Open Office enough that it wouldn't read its own
previous version's files it would then be as poor a product as Office 2007!

I love good/great software and I think Office 2007 is a gem of a software.
So is MySQL and "Synaptic Package Manager". OpenOffice is good too, but
still does not work with all office documents. OpenOffice is not as
sleek. The point I am making is not just about OpenOffice. MS is vastly
improving its software/OS with every release. As in case of Office, I
understand that MS unilaterally "defines" the rules that others have to
follow. To become competitive, the non-proprietary community has to unite.
There is little I find about coming together/standardization of applications
on various Linuxes (if someone knows kindly let us know), except
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/ .

What was the exact "Error 1" that you got?

No actual log file or the system does not boot like. The error is
that kde did not work as expected. It didn't work at all at this point.

Same question here as well, what was this "Error 2" that you got?

Same thing. I got a mixture of gnome and kde effects. I was able to select kde only, but it looked bad. Here you need a screen picture to display the problem.

My own office has both Ubuntu+OOO and Windows+Office, and we find that
while the vast majority of short documents exchange flawlessly, longer
documents and documents using more advanced features sometimes don't

Numbering is particularly sensitive (so watch out if you work with

standardised on a set of fonts that work well for us. Frames and images
are also a bugbear, alignment is often out.

So? Karl is right. Things have gotten much better but OOW is perhaps 95%
compatible at best with MSW and don't get me started on PowerPoint.

Somebody really needs to sink that ISO fiasco and hope governments will
not consider OOXML an open standard.

Now if Ubuntu will get itself into a position where businesses will
consider it...

I get power point files all the time from Windows users, and OO
picks them up and displays them very good. I did use OO to show a number
of slides to a large group of people and had no problems of any sort.
This was version about 1.2 because it had just come out.
