There should be no limitation to the so-called formating. Please
tell us which GUI software you are using. In a terminal you can use $
sudo mkfs.ext3 which should format the whole partition, or if not will
produce an error message that might help :-)

Anyway just for additional information:
We are using 64bit alternate ubuntu disc(we tried 8.04 to 9.04. Also 32
bit installation suceeded). We want to use 64bit since the machine has
5GB of memory.
Processor is Intel QUAD Q9550.
