And use your isp's dns servers:

http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=28968
If your software requires DNS server settings, use: 207.69.188.185,
207.69.188.186, and 207.69.188.187

You can modify /etc/resolv.conf from a terminal:

$ gksu gedit /etc/resolv.conf

then enter:
nameserver 207.69.188.185
nameserver 207.69.188.186
nameserver 207.69.188.186
and save the file.

Now try to ping yahoo.com and google.com.

We used pppconfig and was advised to leave the set up "Provider" alone
but did enter te rest such as modem, phone #, etc.
but no dns numbers

So give the above a try. You can always change it back if it doesn't
work for you.

And, in fact, next PPP connection resolv.conf will almost certainly get
rewritten to its current values - but if this works in the meantime, then we
can tell you how to make it permanent.

do I literately type nameserver or my provider's name like earthlink.net
than I get this heading screen Applications Places System Then do I just
type in the above nameserver or (earthlink.net 207.69.....
John appreciate very much your patience.... John

This is what Earthlink gave us Prefered DNS server 207.69.188.171
Preffered DNS server 207.69.188.172
Then I got the page up with *resolv.config X and again *resolv config X
and I typed the above in, entered !
Still no connectioR

REALLY IS THERE ANYONE WITH UBUNTU 8.10 AND A WORKING DIAL UP AND
BROWSER CONNECTION? JOHN HEINEN

REALLY DID YOU ACTUALLY TRY ENTERING THE ISP'S DNS IN /etc/resolv.conf
as suggested? If so: 1) what was the result, and 2) post your
$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
as you've been asked to do on numerous occasions.

You were given *explicit* instructions to test if this works or not. If
it doesn't work, then fine, we/someone can try another suggestion. But
you have managed to prolong this thread with snippets of supposed
information that doesn't make sense. Example:

You can modify /etc/resolv.conf from a terminal:

$ gksu gedit /etc/resolv.conf

then enter:
nameserver 207.69.188.185
nameserver 207.69.188.186
nameserver 207.69.188.186
and save the file.

Now try to ping yahoo.com and google.com.

Did you do that? If so what were the results? If you *did* do that and
the results failed then say so.

PING yahoo.com (209.191.93.53) 56(84) bytes of data

PING Google.com No response

Thank you we did get connected with Firefox, appreciate yours and and
others effort helping us to get going. Appreciate your offer to but I am
retired and........................... John
