These kids are driving me crazy to fix this pos computer... This is the
second post on this matter, I gave up the first time.

I can't understand this Compac Presario. I have no networking, but for
all I know according to ifconifg, route, etc. It should be working.
Linksys assigned ip and updated resolv.conf I tried 8.04 and 9.04 and
slackware 10!

I have an ip, I can even see atlabs-1 on the linksys.

Why won't networking work on this cheap walmart computer with Realtek
8139too loaded and /etc/resolv.conf is updated but nothing working,
ping, localnet, nothing.

Worked perfect in XP, even tried swapping cables and ports.

Any ideas short of throwing a nic at it? Would it be easier to get a
linksys usb wifi adapter to work on this junk?

Care to try again with some details?

SR1603wm i wonder what the wm stands for WindowsMachine:( or
WindowsMess?

Windows XP says Realtek 8139 network device. Ubuntu says 8139too module
loaded.

I do route and it shows default route same as my notebook except I'm
using wlan0 and wifi on notebook. Compac shows eth0

I do ifconfig and it shows ip address and all the normal lo interface
and eth0

Pull up linksys and it shows ip address for computer, but the computer
can't ping, you can't ping computer etc.

/etc/resolv.conf shows everything on the working computer.

At least that's what I get when I first boot up. After disconnect with
panel applet it never even shows connected again and there is no route
now, cannot reconnect. Did not even work when it showed connected...

Furthermore, the video comes up in low resolution. Oh neat-O, not
recognizing built in ati radeon either. So I grab a usb thumb drive
hoping to run some test and cp over to my notebook and put in this help
request. Hum, does not recognize it:(

heck with it, I insert Windows 7 RC1 (sure it recognize anything
right?), hum machine will not boot from dvd, only cdroms.

This things not even 3 years old and hardly used. I guess they get
walmart to sell all their old outdated crap. Like karl said, they sold
out to HP - this one isn't listed anymore. Didn't come with XP restore
disk and it was xmas and nobody thought to make one.

hum, we have 2 of these boxes, I will try and recover drive in the other
one we robbed the memory out of. I was hoping I could get Ubuntu up on
it since no restore disk and I'm not buying any disk or running
unlicensed version. heck for the price of a licensed windows disk I
could buy them a netbook. I've blown so much money over the years
buying software, no more....

That spelled Compaq. Any way, I disabled acpi and all other suggestions
I could find online mii-tool etc. Nothing worked. Tried setting up
manually with IP, default route, dns address, etc. Still nothing.

When I first boot it shows connected, but nothing works. I do..
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

and it will never even show connected again.
