a few questions about sound settings

hi all I just wanted to no if there was a way I could turn mic boost on using orca I'm running ubuntu 8.10 and skype is uding pulseaudio so that's the mixer I need the mic boost for. I've figured out how to take the volume to the max but not the boost. also is there anything special I have to do to get all my sounds orca etc to go threw my external usb sound card?--
