They stand to make money by selling me a webcam.
On the box of this webcam is clearly written what OS's are supported!
So if we further the use of Linux and increase the number of
people using it and buying hardware they will take notice and if they
don't, some small company will.
Do you mention to the vendors that you intend to use their hardware
with Linux when you but it? Because if you don't, then there is
nothing for them to notice.
Did you mention to MSI that you use the webcam with Linux?
Some people are writing programs and
code and they are certainly doing their part. If we users sent emails
out to everyone we know to let them know of the advantages of Linux we
would likely make some converts.
I do not care about converting people to my religion, OS, or
scientific theory. I do care that my religion, OS, and scientific
theory are solid and stand on their own merits. So long as Linux /
Ubuntu / PetOS do not support the hardware that I need it to support,
I have no use for it. Which OS would you recommend for me if I want to
use a webcam?
Linux! A lot of webcams are supported by the gspca driver. See
http://moinejf.free.fr/webcam.html
With enough users we would get the
hardware we want. I really don't think there is any other way.
So have you written to the hardware vendors to express interest in
Linux support?
Usually, it is not the hardware vendor who provides the Linux support,
it's the community!
Instead of yelling around about the bad support of MSI you could use
your time to provide information to the community about your cam.
Did you check http://moinejf.free.fr/webcam.html to see if your cam is
supported?
- Provide exact Vendor and Model information (when possible with a link
to the products site)
- lsusb shows the vendor:product ID, good to know
- linux-media@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx mail list would be a good place to ask for
support
