not coming back from logout

i have been running into this problem. it's intermittent, but annoying.
when i log out and log back in, the program goes through the default sound
and comes up into a blank screen or into a window where the program icons in
the panel are on the right side of the screen and nothing else appears. has
anyone had this problem and how did you fix it?
