The Microsoft AND the Linux communities are (trying to) emulate
pre-existing UNIX communities.
As stated in a previous mail, the oldest usenet message that I can find on
a Microsoft newsgroup is from june 1996, but the newsgroups must have
existed before that, because there are even newsgroups about Windows for
Workgroups (Win3.11).
Linux was born on 25 august 1991, and its birth was announced... on a
newsgroup. We had to wait until 1994 before there was a 1.0 version of the
kernel, and it was already 1998 when there was a Windows-GUI-lookalike
called KDE. Gnome was started in 1999.
Meanwhile, Microsoft (and its newsgroups) already existed.
