How install NVIDIA drivers? Can't disable X

Hi,
I'm trying to install drivers for a GeForce210 video card on Ubuntu Desktop. I followed their instructions, but I'm getting the error that X needs to be shut off before the drivers can be installed. Makes sense, but Desktop automatically puts you in the X/GNOME environment. How can I get around this? I tried booting into text only mode, but then it's at runlevel 1 and the installer doesn't like that either. I killed the offending X process, but that just logged me out. Ideas? TIA!
