That's not quiet what I meant. Is there any way to set up gdm in 9.10 so that it asks you for a

sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set --type boolean
/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list true

I want to be presented with a Username: box to type my name into, at
present I get a Login button which I have to click on *before* I
enter my username. What else could I possibly want to do at this
point?
Perhaps try your hand at modifying the config files. I believe the
correct ones _may_ be /etc/gdm/custom.conf and the files
in /usr/share/gdm. $ cat /etc/gdm/custom.conf
will give you more info.
Of course, google & backup first.
you will be asked which you'd like to use during the installation.
If it fails to ask for the configuration during installation you can:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
and reconfigure from there.
KDM offers me only a box for username and a box for password, no list of
usernames.
Am I correct in thinking that is what the OP wished for?
I have also installed XDM and WDM but have yet to test them.
