Is there any way to set up gdm in 9.10 so that it asks you for a
login name immediately rather than having to click on the Login
button first?

sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set --type boolean
/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list true

from

That's not quiet what I meant.

I want to be presented with a Username: box to type my name into, at
present I get a Login button which I have to click on *before* I
enter my username. What else could I possibly want to do at this
point?

Perhaps try your hand at modifying the config files. I believe the
correct ones _may_ be /etc/gdm/custom.conf and the files
in /usr/share/gdm. $ cat /etc/gdm/custom.conf
will give you more info.
Of course, google & backup first.

Or just install package KDM instead of GDM. If you only install it
you will be asked which you'd like to use during the installation.

If it fails to ask for the configuration during installation you can:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
and reconfigure from there.

KDM offers me only a box for username and a box for password, no list of
usernames.
Am I correct in thinking that is what the OP wished for?

I have also installed XDM and WDM but have yet to test them.

Now that's a possibility, thanks. I had considered going to the much
more basic xdm.

The only issue is that, after quite a lot of hassle, I have finally
got gnome-keyring-daemon working properly and I suspect that may need
gdm to work correctly.
