I seem to recall reading about a year ago about a problem some laptops
have with their hard disk drives resetting far more frequently than they
should, and dramatically shortening the HDD life. I'm not sure if
"resetting" is the right word, and I'm clearly not googling the right
words either.
I have a laptop here (new), and the hard disk is making a faint but
constant buzz. It works fine, but I'm concerned that this buzz is a
symptom of something damaging in the longer term, so wanted to follow up
the "resetting" problem.
Is that description too vague, or can someone remember the issue I'm
trying to describe and give me a pointer for further research?
Thanks, K.

Google for "load cycle count".
For example:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerManagement
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/59695

Parking and un-parking the heads may make a clicking noise. A constant
buzz doesn't seem to indicate that your drive is affected by the load
cycle issue.

For quite some time I have used various desktop launchers for quick
access to web pages on my home network. These survived upgrades
through several versions of Ubuntu up to 9.10 64-bit. After running
into a couple of 64-bit related problems, I did a fresh install of
32-bit 9.10, retaining ~/ on a separate partition. Since then one of
the launchers opens gedit instead of Firefox. I've been searching for a
solution for days.
Here are the contents of three .desktop files. Two of them work OK, the
other opens the page in gedit.
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Icon=text-html

Name=FeedTime.desktop

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Yesterday I had Firefox3.6 and Thunderbird3.01 running on my Ubuntu9.10
amd64 machine. I had java plugin issues with Firefox and ended up
re-formatting and reinstalling Ubuntu.
I downloaded the Moz files and extracted them to /home/<me>/firefox and
/home/<me>/thunderbird. If I go to the file browser and double click
their shell scripts a dialog box pops up and I choose "run". I see a
little disk activity but nothing else happens.
If I open a terminal and type:
:cd thunderbird/thunderbird
:~/thunderbird/thunderbird ls
I get a listing of the directory including run-mozilla.sh, thunderbird &
thunderbird-bin
If I do:
:~/thunderbird/thunderbird$ thunderbird
I get:
The program 'thunderbird' is currently not installed. You can install it
by typing: sudo apt-get install thunderbird
thunderbird: command not found
They were running yesterday but not today so I must be making some kind
of basic mistake and would appreciate some help again.
Thanks, Jim

Sorry, what does this mean?
Are you referring to the manufacturer's driver disk? That usually
won't work for Ubuntu unless one uses ndiswrapper which I would not
recommend for this particular application.
?I keep a ms computer just to keep the INTERNET open because they don't

Pfft. Who cares if *they* don't support Ubuntu- *we* support Ubuntu!
Of course, you need internet access to read this list ;^)
?.number to modem ?easier
Huh?

Hey List,
Can anyone recommend a graphics card that can definitely play full
1080p video under Ubuntu. Currently I have a Palit GT 240 which can
play 1080i at 20Mbps OK but above that and up it struggles. However
1080p at 10Mbps isn't watchable.
Recommendations are welcome.
Getting hardware decoding on Graphics card is.... a fool's erand, I
think... not even always reliable in Windows.
Assuming you have a multi-core cpu with that fancy graphics card, get ye
to mplayer home page, and download the multi-threaded mplayer source
they offer there.
First, sudo apt-get build dep mplayer mencoder
Then untar the source and ./configure and make
If you want to do things the right way, here you would build a debian
package. I, however, and lazy and simply copied the mplayer binary just
compiled into /usr/bin (replacing ubuntu's mplayer.)
then add the following to your /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf file
vo=xv (or vo=gl if you prefer on your system)
lavdopts = threads=2 (or 4 of you have a quad core)
use with smplayer or gnome-mplayer front ends.. enjoy your High def
video on just near any video card.

To run a program that is not in your path, you type...
cd ~/to_directory_file_is_in
./program_name
or type full path of program...
~/thunderbird/thunderbird
I think you should make some shortcuts on the desktop to make it simple
to start your programs. Right-click on the desktop or gnome panel and
click create launcher...

Since *buntu 9.xx my box here at home has turned into a professional
mourner, it is at it right now, wail moan wail. I am not sure but
believe this is a graphics problem, apart from lousy performance it
makes a big song and dance about it too!, but it certainly isn't the
hard drive in my case.
