It would help to know what kind of ethernet card your laptop has.

Some Dells have Intel, some have Broadcoms and some have nVidia...

open a terminal and run the following command:

lspci | grep -i ethernet

and paste the result in your reply...

Looking at Dell.com just says Ethernet controller... so who knows...
