Thanks. That is what I thought it was doing. I have the computer setting
a dynmic dns address and I can get in using ssh. (So yes I know the
address.) But to reconfigure the ATT 2WIRE router I need to be on the
LAN side to log in and it is a web browser interface. Unfortunately the
location of the remote computer is not easy to access, so it is hard to
get in and out for testing.
Ah yes... I have the same problem with one of those. I gave my brother
one of my test machines & now I can't remote to his 2wire (I could
previously). Tried to talk him through reconfiguring for port 5900 using
the downloaded manual on my side, but that's pretty difficult without X
access. I suspect that the problem (in my case) is that there is a MAC
filter in the router that is blocking the VNC as the only thing changed
was the PC/Nic/MAC. I'd say I'm too busy to drive up & do it local...
but just to lazy to do it.
These might help:
http://www.realvnc.com/support/portforward.html
http://www.realvnc.com/support/faq.html#firewall
Don't worry that the links are for a commercial (RealVNC) product; the
explainations are clear & applicable to most all basic VNC setups. Plus,
the connection test page is worth using:
http://www.realvnc.com/cgi-bin/nettest.cgi
Dang... just checking that last & I realized that I upgraded the
firmware on *my* router & forgot to configure VNC on *my* side to port
forward 5900 to this system. :-[
I'll have to wait until he gets back next week to test on his 2wire.
