Re: My New Modem Won't Install

Thanks for the helpful link. It is good to know it is possible to have this
modem work. My Dell came with Ubuntu 8.04. But I have done updates every
week, so I should have the most current version of Ubuntu.

When I plug in the USB modem, I get an icon on the desktop. No wizard to
install the modem. When I click on the Verizon desktop icon, I get an
explorer type screen. When I click on any of the files nothing happens.

When I click on the Network button and choose the Mobile Broadband tab,
there is nothing there.

I am an absolute computer novice. All I have ever done on my computer is
email, research, forums, and shop. So sadly I did not understand anything
in the info from the link to the other forum.

I wondered about ejecting the modem? Is that something that should be
done? It sounds counterproductive.

Thank you so much for trying to help me. I'm sorry to be such a beginner.

Hi Earl,
Thanks for your help! I searched the archives of this list and found the
answer: you need to add "Window list" to the panel, that solved my problem!
(Right click on the panel, choose "add to panel" and then search the list
of
available add on's. I added Weather report and Tomboy notes in the same
movement: cool!
Thank you, have a nice weekend!

Freddy, I will probably glean much more from this list than I can
contribute, but want to jump on this one before someone else does. An
icon for a minimized window should appear on the bottom panel. If you
have yours set to Autohide as do I, then just move the mouse pointer to
the bottom of the screen, then click on the icon when the panel...well,
unhides itself. If you have deleted that panel, then Alt+Tab should
cycle through any active/open windows, whether minimized or not, just
like in Uncle Bill's OS. HTH!

You get to 10.04.1 two ways. One is updates over time and you
get to 10.04.1 The other way is to get the 10.04 ISO which has 10.04.1
within with some special software to detect the video card and sound card.

So I am still wanting to know what he was upgrading. Still do not know.

Shali

I guess its right click on Applications > Edit menus.

That will only edit the menu for the current user. While at the edit
menus window choose the Help button. This will bring up the help
application for customizing the panel menu bar. From there choose,
"The System Administration Guide."
From there choose, "editing system menus." the part you arel ooking
for is, "2.5.5.?Deleting an Item from a Menu."
It starts off with:
To delete an item from a menu for all users.

What version of Ubuntu is this? As I recall Lucid (I think) does not
include libstdc++.so.5 as it is a very old library... a compat library
is at this moment included in Maverick due in October. You can file a
backport request for this to Lucid.

Your RealPlayer plugin (helix) has been built against the older
libstdc++.s0.5 library rather than the newer libstdc++.so.6

For now remove your realplayer plugin either by package manager if you
installed it that way or by removing the file it is trying to load.

That looks like a non standard mozilla plugins location so might be
symlinked from the standard one...

Post to this list the output of: locate nphelix.so

Once the plugin is removed firefox will run normally.

James

nphelix.so is in the following:

jim@JimsBook:~$ locate nphelix.so
/etc/alternatives/iceape_nphelix.so
/etc/alternatives/iceweasel_nphelix.so
/etc/alternatives/xulrunner_nphelix.so
/opt/RealPlayer/mozilla/nphelix.so
/opt/real/RealPlayer/mozilla/nphelix.so
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins/nphelix.so
/usr/lib/helix/player/mozilla/nphelix.so
/usr/lib/iceape/plugins/nphelix.so
/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/nphelix.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nphelix.so
/usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/plugins/nphelix.so
/var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/iceape_nphelix.so
/var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/iceweasel_nphelix.so
/var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/xulrunner_nphelix.so

Removed with Synaptic, will try

Thanks,

Jim

To Jim - do you have a specific need for helix player? If not remove
it and you'll be fine.

Helixplayer is gone. Maybe a .config file to edit somewhere?

Same result for starting Firefox even in safe mode.

Thanks,

Jim

I watched a movie about the Novatel USB 760 which said you need
to return the card to them and get your $50.00 back. Then they charge
$49.99 a month for the use of the modem.

But all the examples in the movie where with Windows computers.
