It is an option; you can turn if off. I don't know for sure if it is
on by default, as I do not have VT on any of my machines to try it
out.
it's off by default.

I have not tried VMware Workstation in many years, as it is a paid-for
piece of software & I prefer to use free tools. Some people prefer it.
I am perfectly happy with VirtualBox myself.
I take the same idea with you.
I'll move to VirtualBox from now on!
