thanks for your reply.
after executing the first two commands (source list addition and
wget) i tried to do the apt-get upgrade and it asks for 564mb to be
downloaded which is not possible at the moment.

so i just did the apt-get install w32codecs and still i could not get
the audio for wmv

Actually it should have been 'sudo apt-get update', not *upgrade*.
