Sounds like you're missing a piece here or there, but without more
specifics it's hard to tell which.  Try poking around in the power
settings for the battery issue.

Is this in a menu or on the panel or the notification area of the panel or what?

The icon is on the top panel, which I have never changed.   On power
setterings, I checked always display and battery icon is back.  I had
not changed it.

Anything else you need to know?

Gary, have you tried adding a notification area icon to the top panel?
Right-click, add to panel.

That was the first thing I tried. By the way, if I use the Netbook
interface it works fine, it's the Gnome interface that gives the
problem.
