Note that in my reply above, marked "resolved", I did manage to get myI don't use the trinity (Applications-Places-System) applet, I prefer
panels back. Now I just discovered that all of the items in the Places menu
on the top panel display a terminal now, rather than the appropriate folder
(with the exception of Computer).
the main menu by itself - less space in the panel and one button
instead of three. Guess I'm monobuttonistic....
I figured out what happened to my Places menu. While hacking my way out of lost panels, I created an empty folder and then opened it with a gnome-terminal. Unnoticed by me there was a checkbox that forced ALL folders to be opened by gnome-terminal.
