One possibility is the drive is no good. I've had to replace quite a
few drives, and are the most-replaced item on my boxes. [Stopped
buying Sony after losing half a dozen drives with short lives.]

Sometimes the symptoms can be quite odd. For example, a well-used
drive on my linux box got flaky. I moved it to a win box and it worked
fine. I was then sure the problem MUST be in the lin box and fiddled a
lot to get it to work, with no results. I finally bought another one
just like it on sale, installed it in the lin box, and it was fine.
Never did figure out what kept k3b and that particular drive from
getting along.

I'd be interested in looking at that - please post a link when you get
it done. I've not found one that works as well as what's on my Win
box, and I'd prefer to run on ubuntu if possible. I'm especially
interested in one that works well with a [good] picture of text rather
than a scan.

Thanks,

You can PXEboot the installer and do net installs.  The kernel and

So I don't need SmartStart ?

I don't know that you do, if you're using it in your Infrastructure
already, then it may be better to use that.

No, I have never used SmartStart before. Someone said that HP severs have
security issue and need SmartStart to install OS'es, but I don't know how
true this is, might just be FUD.

Right on...

FWIW, we have a whole slew of various HP servers that are tested
without using SmartStart (they're all installed via normal PXE)
including a pair of DL140 G3s.

Thanks, that is good news.

Of course, take that with a grain of
salt as there could be hardware differences, so YMMV.  I've seen
instances where things change, like RAID controllers and so forth that
affect whether or not you can install at all, let alone via PXE.

Ah, I do have SATA RAID cards installed. The drive is showing up on the BIOS
startup.

Its a LSILogic MPTBIOS-6.10.05.00 2006.11.01

Maybe the SmartStart requirement is for situations where your servers
have some sort of TPM enabled? (Trusted Platform)

Not AFAICT.

Thanks,

Aaron

Thank you Colin.
Yes, indeed, I got it.  I created a new user and then entered it.
It came out ok.  Yes, indeed, when I clicked 'Home folder' and then
'Desktop', it opened up ok.  No more 'Error:  File not found.'  Now
what?  I do not want to leave my original user's place because it
isn't fixed yet.  Otherwise, it would confuse me more if I try to
transfer everything what is in it to the new user's place.  How do I
do that?  What more I am asking myself a question, "What would happen
if the similar problem would happen in the new user's place because it
happened in my original place at my unexpectation?  And then I could
not fix it."  I need to know how to fix it.
Can I use Nautilus Actions Configuration to fix the problem?  I am
still learning.  Jim

Please take no offense, but there's no sense in running
NetworkManager on a server.

Very true, but it comes by default in a standard Ubuntu installation.

Not on Ubuntu Server Edition.

Cheers,

+1

And if your apache install is internet-facing, you're better off using
the server edition.

Please don't just put it on a blog.  I don't (and won't) ever get any

prevent it showing.

Good point... I'd forgotten about that one.

Please Fix This One Bug In 11.04 Before Beta1...

Hi,

Fully tested 11.04 Alpha3 on my main desktop computer.

I've got just one bad bug that I hope will be fixed in time for Beta1.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/697358
(Classic Desktop/Gnome Panel/Can not rearrange open programs on bottom
panel)

Amazing isn't it? Took me forever to find a Windows app to do this on
Win (running in a Virtual Machine). One of the key "features" that I'd
always point out to Windows users was the ability to easily swap the
windows in the panel.

Subsribed to the bug report & added an "This affects me to".
