I am a complete Ubuntu novice. I have it installed on an old, slow, small
machine in order to slowly learn the OS commands, etc., looking forward to
the time when I will be comfortable having it as my main OS.
When I upgraded, I received a simple message on screen stating that my
hardware could not support Unity. Then the upgrade continued and
installed in what I guess is "classic" mode. I don't see any difference
from 10.10, but of course I probably have no clue what to look for,
either.
My point is that apparently the developers did, in fact, keep their
promise, because Ubuntu 11.04 is up and running without a hitch on my old
boat anchor, albeit without Unity.
Regards, Joe Bissett
