I have the latest VirtualBox on a 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

Under that I have 64 bit Debian Squeeze, and 32 bit Natty Narwhal. The
Debian runs fine, but the Ubuntu installation is hard to boot. I
need to
"reset" it many times, it usually just puts out a black screen and
hangs. After many resets it finally boots very quickly and works
then fine.

That problem was not with earlier versions of Ubuntu.

That might be a conflict with VirtualBox and current GRUB, or current
Ubuntu Kernel, I don't know.

Anyone rings any bells? Maybe some kernel parameter to GRUB config?
This
is irritating.

You are installing the virtual box drivers and letting it build a
kernel
for it on first boot right? (Devices, Install Guest Additions) That
makes a world of difference for virtual machines.

Yes, guest additions are installed.

If it's not that check your settings make sure your giving enough ram
and if you have a slow processor maybe give 2 cores. Also make sure
your
processor supports and is turned on virtualization Acceleration (BIOS:
AMDV etc).

I have Core i7 processor, and all virtualization options are on. I run
VMware server on this machine too (Debian clients), and everything works
fine, except that Ubuntu under VirtualBox.

I never had any problems with Ubuntu inside a virtual machine on a AMD
Phenom II 1090T (or 955) BE with Virtualbox with both my host system as
Ubuntu& Windows 7. :) Let us know what you find out.

This is strange. Earlier Ubuntus worked fine too, but not the latest.

Q: What do you call 15 blondes in a circle?
A: A dope ring.

Q: Why do blondes put their hair in ponytails?
A: To cover up the valve stem.

Yeah odd... just a shot in a dark. Try turning on 3D Acceleration and
give a good bit of Video RAM. See if that helps? Also just to be sure
you should give it at least 1GB of system RAM just for testing to rule
out any issue with memory.

On Google quite a few people have problems with Ubuntu 11.04 and Virtual
Box... Some say to select classic mode at the login screen so unity
doesn't try to run.

Which flavor of Virtual Box are you running? I had to switch to the
PUEL version to get Natty to run.

Just the windows downloadable from www.virtualbox.org. I think it is PUEL.
