Hmm, after studying this thread, I fail to see how this thread ties into
Ubuntu software issue which is what the URL is for!!

To add to this (I haven't read all replies) have you tried loading gimp
from terminal and watching the output to see what's going on? I would
certainly try that and viewing the logs as well after you do as Ioannis
said.

Did you point that out to an Israeli born Palestinian, either Muslim or
Christian?
Oh, BTW, there are Christian Arabs. For Christ's sake (heh heh), where
do we think Christianity originate? Arafat's wife is Christian, for
example. But, I doubt she's evangelical or roman catholic. These are
later inventions. Definitely not mormon, like Glenn Beck.
And, any foreign born Jew can go to Israel and have more rights (land,
employment, etc...) than an indigenous arab-israeli (again, christians
included) and if tried, in a civil court, not a military one. If this is
not racism or apartheid, I don't know what is.
But of course, for apocalypse to happen....we need religion. :)
All 3 of them. Maybe we'll have a better world if they all...mmmmnnn

I have asked this question on the GIMP list but no one seemed to be able
to offer any suggestions.
I am running GIMP 2.6 on my Maverick partition...and for the past
several months the file selector (open file) seems to lockup more often
than not.
When it happens I cannot load any file or change directories and change
the file type. Then weirdly things **might** start working again and a
similar thing happens when I try to save files.
Anybody have any ideas? Other than this GIMP runs fine.
Just discovered that opening files by using control-o works (all the
time??) - it's when I click on "file-open" that the problems arise.
Does that give anybody any clues ??

Really? That's rather counter to my experience of either.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel
"Israel was established as a homeland for the Jewish people and is
often referred to as a Jewish state. The country's Law of Return grants
all Jews and those of Jewish lineage the right to Israeli citizenship."
and for the second, from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heritage_tourism
"Decolonization and immigration form the major background of much
contemporary heritage tourism. Falling travel costs have also made
heritage tourism possible for more people.
Another possible form involves religious travel or pilgrimages. Many
Catholics from around the world come to the Vatican and other sites
such as Lourdes or Fátima. Large numbers of Jews have both visited
Israel and emigrated there. Many have also gone to Holocaust sites and
memorials."
Of course, that neither makes one Israeli nor is it in any way
definitive, but certainly shows a cultural if not religious affiliation
and, therefore, a national allegiance to (probably too strong a word.
Possibly, "identification with?") Israel, at least in it's persona of
Jewish nation.
Admittedly, my own experience with either subject is nil but I /do/
read and try to keep up.

religion).....

ps: apologies to Lithuanians and Mormons for using these dreadful

The majority of the Palestinians who were "kicked out" were
occupying land that their tribal chieftains sold in fee simple to
mostly British backed religious groups starting in the latter 19th
century. The lands were purchased expressly for the establishment
of Jewish Colonies in the historical areas of the biblical era
homeland.
The refusal of the squatters to recognize legal contracts made by
the actual holders of title and control has led to generations of
unrest and political problems in the entire area.
The surrounding Arab States don't want most of the "refugees" as
they have nothing to offer except a further drain on already
stretched resources.
