Kubuntu 11.04 : wireless repeatedly disconnecting after a few seconds

Hi,
I've just replaced Slackware 13.37 (with KDE 4.5.5 and a hand-compiled NetworkManager) by Kubuntu 11.04 on my Toshiba Tecra laptop, to see if I could make life easier for me and use a general public distro.
Everything looks quite fine, except... wireless. Keeps disconnecting all the time. I took a peek in /var/log/syslog, but all I get is a flood of more or less laconic messages like this:
wpa_supplicant: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED bssid=bl:ah:bl:ah:bl:ah reason=0
etcetera...
Now I don't even have the slightest idea where to start looking. And this is a serious showstopper. Any suggestions?
cheers,
Niki Kovacs
