Removing usb_modeswitch and installing it again seems to have solved this
for me. I do not need to constantly switch the device every time I plug it
in.

Hi,E173s-2
I am new to Ubuntu (but not Linux/UNIX) and trying to get the Huawei
modem to work on Ubuntu 11.04. Is there an update or patch to get thismodem
to work on Ubuntu?
I have this model and its working out of the box with 11.04. What I
had discovered is you have to plug in the device before the kernel
gets loaded up or else it would not work if you just plug it in during
a session. Hope this helps.

Of course, you might discount this possibility, but remember that one in a
million chances happen 99% of the time.
