KDE and XFCE do not come into it. Unity is a shell for GNOME.
Unity is a UI interface built as a plug-in for the Open GL compositing manager Compiz. The one that creates the wobbly windows and other eye candy. The rest of the Unity environment (file manager and such) is gtk3 based just like the current Gnome 3 dekstop where the UI is called Gnome Shell.
