Brasero problems

Hi all,
am having problems with Brasero on 12.04. Writes CDs and dvd's
that aren't recognised by anything. Have tried with both the drives in
my tower, and an external usb powered drive , same result.
Have tried on another machine with Mint, again same result, tried different
variety of both CD's and DVD's, same results.
Have installed xfburn, which shows "Drive Full" with both drives in the tower when I try to burn
then promptly crashes.

I am also getting error message below at random when I am not using Libreoffice.
Can't see how they could be connected. (I have sent an error report)

Sorry Ubuntu 12.04 has experienced an internal error

It's a Compaq 4640 Presario Pentium 2 which has worked well but had way too much stuff on it from its previous owner who wanted me to reformat it so their privacy was protected, so I did that, and the problem I ended up with is a simple one. ... I've been able to get it to boot off of the 3.5" floppy and go into DOS, but when I try to change drives, it will NOT recognize the CD drive! ... I'm thinking that the best OS to use is Win98SE cuz WinXP home is too memory intensive to use with the P2. ...
