hey chris,

 i'm pretty new to red hat 9 myself. been using it for a month now on
a dual boot windows box. i had the same problem that you had with gaim
and trying to install a newer version...got the same libgtkspell
error. i am still using version 59.8 or whatever version that came
with red hat 9.

 i discovered something though. i thought i needed to upgrade gaim
because i didn't see msn or yahoo in the list of available messengers
(AIM and ICQ loaded by default). well, all you have to do is load the
yahoo and msn plug-ins. they are already availble on your standard
version...nothing to download. once i did this, it worked great and
now i don't really have a reason to upgrade gaim.

 also, if you are an avid msn im user (like me) then try AMSN. i think
i got it from sourceforge. you'll have to compile it yourself
though...no rpm file. this was my very first .tar.gz install and it
works great. AMSN is almost identical to msn im.

 i hope that helped a little...
