Minimum System Requirements

I have an old Pentium 166 with 48MB of RAM and a 5GB hard drive collecting
dust - I recently read somewhere that Linux was so efficient that it could
actually run on an old PC like mine... Is this information accurate? If not,
what is the bare minimum system requirement for a basic install of Linux?

I wouldn't need it to do much more than view web pages for testing
purposes - could someone recommend an appropriate version of Linux?

Thank you for your help!
Scott
