newbie--folder permissions

I'm trying to install a program (Acrobat) and when trying to create the
directory during the install I get a "permission denied" error. I have my
user account set up as a member of "root", is there something else I need to
do? The "new folder" option in my home directory is greyed out.

Thanks!
