I am a Linux newbie who's looking to avoid past disasters on his next
install attempt. I've prepared an install CD for Ark Linux (see related
post), and I'm in the process of preparing one for Vector Linux.
My history: I've attempted to install RH 9 beside my existing Win98se
partition, and it failed. The error message is something like, "This
version of RHL is incompatible with your system," or something like that.
No further info.
So after multiple attempts (and Win reinstalls, I might add), I thought I'd
try a different distro. I tried Ark on a bunk HD I had lying around and it
installed, but the hd failed to read during 1st time boot up.
I'm almost ready to try installing Linux alongside Win98 again, but I want
to avoid problems w/ losing Win98's boot sector.
Which will work better for me? I am assuming that Ark's install program
doesn't take into account my system's "1024 cylinder limit" requirement for
boot sectors, so I'm leaning toward Vector because I can manually assign
partitions. Plus, from what I hear Vector is ideal for an outdated system
such as mine (AMD K-6/2 500).
Any tips before I risk mucking up my hd again?
