NumLock starts disabled

I've seen this posted before (via www.redhat.com), but how does one turn
on the NumLock automatically in Gnome? I've tried inserting the
recommended code in ~/.bashrc and /etc/rc.d/rc.local, and my bios "NumLock
on" is enabled. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
