Ethernet Transmission Question

Hello,
 Maybe this isn't the right group to post to, but perhaps
I can get a little closer.
    -I am interested in how ethernet cards transmit sine waves.
The hardware that actually generates the electrical signal is
something I'd like to look into. Anyone have any ideas on where
I might look to learn more about what makes ethernet cards tick?
