"<> Could anyone tell me the fastest mirror sites to download Mandrake 9.2?
"<> I have a P3 with 192 mb ram, 40gig drive to put it on. I want to look
"<> into putting star office on it or Wordperfect if it works with my
"<> network. In fact I am hoping it works well. Then I want to use it as
"<> an actual business computer on a network. Maybe even upgrade it to a
"<> 2 ghz Athlon processor and case.
"<> I used to have an old copy of Mandrake 2 years ago. It was okay, but I

"<> good internet/wordprocessing station. It will REPLACE my Windows 98
"<> computer if so.
Any version of Linux could be used in the capicity. I use Debian Linux,
although, the list of what it does couldn't fit in this space... ;)
"<> I understand Lindows can reverse compile Windows software and run it.
"<> I have a few applications such as AutoCad which will not run on Linux

"<> of Windows software forever. Hopefully the future will bring new and
"<> better applications for the Civil Engineering/Surveying field.
I don't know who told you about this "Reverse Engineering" thing, but
thats incorrect. As with all distrobutions of Linux, there are certain
programs that "Emulate" windows environments... Wine, DOSEMU, etc...
That will run "SOME" windows programs... But this is normally a hit and
miss avenue of approach. Now, since you didn't list any of the other
programs you say will not run, I'll deal with AutoCad... There's
LinuxCAD, VariCAD and Varkon and they cost around $100 dollars down to
free. Also, instead of dealing with StarOffice's cheap price, you could
try OpenOffice which is totally free. This gives you the word
processor, presentation, spread***, drawing, and a host of other toys,
again, too long to list here. :)
Now, for the first part of your question... where to get Mandrake
from... have you been to the web site? Try using Google and put in
(Mandrake Mirrors) for the search criteria... This will lead you back to
their web site and download page and there is a "HUGE" list of "Mirrors"
to choose from. Not knowing what your internet speed is, its hard to
tell you that this site or that one will be faster... the truth be told,
the speed will depend on your connection, as the majority of the sites
listed are on backbone connections... OC45 - OC192's. If you were to
get the full brunt of one of those, your little home connection would
smoke for a second and then pop and that'd be the end of that. :)
HTH:)
