CD burning priority question?

As I understand it, the reason for wanting to run
CD burning software like 'cdrecord' as root is so
the software can set higher priority to prevent
possible buffer underflow.

Instead of running as root, I set the software
permission suid, e.g.,
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root ... /usr/bin/cdrecord

Am I accomplishing the same end by doing it
this way? Any pitfalls?

(I'm running a on single-user workstation.)

Thanks for your advice.

Charles Sullivan
