There are a few things that concern me about this right off the bat:
IDE RAID controller:
IDE drives should never be used in production servers that are going to be
hit by more than one user at a time (unless, of course, IDE has recently
adopted some of the capabilities of the SCSI specification).
I don't know how well their RAID controllers are engineered but with RAID
5 you're talking about a hell of a lot of reads and writes at the same
time.
Maxtor drives:
I don't know if their quality has improved over the years but I stopped
buying Maxtor drives a long time ago (after I had more than one that
sounded like it had rocks in it).
I have a hard time believing that ext3 has anything to do with it. I've
got an old Dell PowerEdge with a RAID 5 SCSI arrary with eight old Seagate
drives in it that has happily repaired itself after several unscheduled,
dirty power downs.
