Truncation of cut and paste contents

Often I have trouble copying data (simple text) between applications
in Red hat Linux Gnome GUI and KDE GUI. Small amounts of data are not
a problem, but large portions of a document cause complete failure of
the copy and paste. There are no crashes or error messages, just
nothing gets transfered. Any ideas?
