    I've also noticed the following error when running fsck /dev/sdb1

    JBD: Failed to read block at offset 4306
    JBD: IO error -5 recovering block 4306 in log
    /dev/sdb1: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short
    read while reading block 4877

    You get a lot of these errors and then

    fsck.ext3: No such device or address while trying to re-open /dev/sdb1
    e2fsck: io manager magic bad!

    Hope this makes sense to someone.
