Recent distributions have the option on their install cd when started in
"rescue mode", to "reinstall windows bootloader". Or find the
/boot/boot.03?? file (length exactly 512 bytes, containing the previous
bootsector) and dd it to a floppy: dd if=/boot/boot.03* bs=512 of=/dev/fd0
and you will have your windows bootloader saved for the rare case you wipe
out your complete / included /boot.

Just make sure the "smp" kernel gets loaded upon install. Most distributions
handle that accordingly, even knoppix (live cd, good to give it a try)
does.
