It takes about a minute to launch Gnome or kde on my 400mhz 128meg pc
with a clean install from cd. Something else is wrong. Do not put more
unknowns into the problem.

/bin/rm ~/.Xauthority
/bin/rm ~/.xsession-errors <-----------------------.
logout/in and see what might be in the above file. ---'

I'm still guessing you have an hosts/ip/dns issue.
Is named off?
   chkconfig --list | grep name
named 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
