Problem with gunzip

I can't figure out if I'm missing something obvious here. I'm trying to open a
file, 4.0-4.0a.diff.gz . It's a driver I am told I need to get X windows to
work, so I'm doing everything without a GUI.

When I try gunzip, I'm told it's a read-only file system, so I can't unzip it.
The permissions are read and execute, for all users (555). But it won't allow
me to change permissions because it's a read-only file. So what do I do now?

I'd appreciate any help anyone can give.
