    Nonsense. :)

The sole difference between a GRP install for your specific processor
and a Stage 1 install is the psychological satisfaction of watching
oodles of compiler output stream by your screen. This didn't help me
understand or appreciate Gentoo at all. Yes, I DO appreciate and
understand Gentoo, but not because of watching compiler output. You
might be able to squeeze out a few tiny bits of performance out of a
Stage 1 compile over and above the GRP for your processor, but the
make.conf flags in the GRP are set pretty good already. (Maybe add
-fomit-frame-pointer at least). And the well-worn saw of Gentoo
forcing people to "learn Linux" is also nonsense. If you can follow
an installation webpage, you can install Gentoo. I think this is a
strength of the distro, not a weakness! You get to configure it how
you want, and it isn't too difficult to install. Yes, you can learn
with Gentoo, but you can learn with any distro if you want to. Also,
the steps that a lot of people claim causes you to learn Linux are
present in both the GRP and Stage 1 installs. Unless downloading and
watching a system bootstrap causes Linux knowledge to be transferred
to the installer's brain, I'd much rather copy over the GRP files on
my P4 laptops, fire up KDE, and get to real *WORK*. When that work is
done for the day, I'll emerge the updates at night. :)
