The nForce2 based mobo is a likely culprit. There is a load of info if you
google for 'nforce2 linux problems'. It might have something to do with the
APIC and ACPI settings. I run on a nForce2 based mobo too, and it hangs
randomly with 2.4.x and 2.6.x kernels.
But I recently added options to my kernel boot up of 'noapic acpi=off
nolapic' and it hasn't hung yet, but there is apparently a theoretical
performance drop (as yet unnoticed).
As for installing it with those options, make sure APIC is turned off in the
BIOS, as is CPU bus disconnect (if you have it). I can't remember what
steps to take to run the installer without APIC but it should be
Google-able.....
