Make sure you have the correct binaries and codecs installed for the
player, if they are installed incorrectly, sometimes the player will still
work, but you'll have aberrant results, and some pretty weird screen
anomalies.

I find Ogle to work quite well, but it depends on which desktop I use.
Gnome works best with it for me, with absolutely no problems at all...it
even looks better than Windows. KDE flickers and the sound is garbled.

You can also check to see if there are any newer drivers for your Video
card...if it's an nVidia, you'll need to take the GLI entry out of your
XF86Config file...located in /etc/X11, and check to see if hardware
acceleration is enabled. If it isn't, enable it.

If you boot with LILO, find the lilo.conf file located in /etc, type 'more
lilo.conf' and look for something that is similar to this entry:

append="hdb=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi"

Where hdb or hdd is your DVD player. If you have your DVD player slaved to
your hard disk, on the same chain then it is more than likely hdb. If you
have it on the secondary chain, then it could either be hdc or hdd.

If it isn't there...add it according to the location of your DVD drive,
the quotes have to be included. Save the file and run LILO, then reboot.

I don't use Grub, but the line should be similar.

Watch your boot messages for something like this:

Vendor: (Vendor name) Model: DVD RW (model) Rev: 2.50
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02

Vendor: (Vendor name) Model: DVD-ROM (model) Rev: S1.6
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02

And look in /var/log/messages for any errors.

If it doesn't take, then you'll need to recompile the kernel for SCSI
emulation.

If it's a burner, and if you have cdrecord installed...try this in a /root
console:

cdrecord --scanbus

You should see something like this:

Cdrecord 2.0 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jrg Schilling
Linux sg driver version: 3.1.24
Using libscg version 'schily-0.7'
scsibus0:

        0,1,0 1) 'Vendor and model' 'S1.6' Removable CD-ROM

DVD's are encrypted according to region. DVD's purchased outside the
region specified for your player will not play unless you reset the player
to whatever region specified for the DVD.

Some of the software that plays them in linux have a hard dime decoding
the DVD's. I've never had that problem with any DVD I've ever tried to
play. It's doubtful you'll ever have this problem with any DVD's you ever
purchase in your area, unless the DVD player is from overseas...etc...

Just .02 from a lurker, hope it helps.
