Yepp, if all the included drivers built in kernel are compiled and
installed, it'll most likely use them immediately when you just plug your
device to the computer, but when there are no default drivers for the
device, you'll have to find and install them. That's a major obstacle for
most as it's not very easy to do for everyone. Even installing nVidia
drivers for X is too difficult for some. I know such people =P But err,
Gnome 2.6 and KDE 3.x are actually quite fast, they don't cause the
sluggishness. The biggest problem is the X server itself. You can just do
a quick google or check their mailinglists. The X server is so old design
that it's just not really up to expectations anymore. There are some
projects which are attempting to replace X, but I haven't tried those.
Well, the XFree86 project developers discussed these things in their
latest meeting and decided about alot of thing. I just hope they get
something done soon, too.
