Gentoo - install failing at # emerge genkernel.

I have tried for days to get Gentoo working and fail every time. I still
desire switching to Gentoo. So, before I give install another shot, I am
bringing the errors I encountered from a month ago here... as best as my
memory will.

Trying 2004.1 universal LiveCD. Also, I have CD's for packages, snapshots,
and portage.

First major problem occurs when using Gentoo Linux/x86 Handbook, at 7.d.
Alternative: Using genkernel, Code Listing 14: Emerging genkernel,
# emerge genkernel. On a networkless stage3 install the system tries to
get genkernel from an FTP site, yet it fails to find genkernel anywhere.
So, I'm stuck starting over each time.

BTW, this is a DHCP connected machine and ifconfig (step 3.b) reports back
the correct info before step 6.a. Chrooting is done.

Step 7.c, and Code Listing 5: I tried using make menuconfig instead
(although I'm not certain I got everything needed in), but am later faced
with same issue at 7.e. Installing Separate Kernel Modules, Installing
Extra Modules, # emerge <package name>. Later I skipped 7.e during another
attempt and actually booted into init3 once. However, eth0 failed to load
and getting on-line help via links2 is hopeless, plus I can't emerge X and
so forth. I've been over step 8.b. Networking Information more times than I
know.

I think that about covers it.

How can I overcome these issues and leave Mandrake behind?

Thanks for your time !
